Coming into its own having broken free from Yugoslavia, Montenegro completes its declaration of independence on the web. No longer about .YU, it’s all about .ME.
Just barely a month after .ASIA has finally gone live, another exciting landrush awaits. This time, for .ME domains. ICANN has assigned the extension to the country of Montenegro after its declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 2006. Afilias Global Registry Services, GoDaddy.com and Montenegrin company ME-Net have partnered in a joint venture called doMEn to manage .ME ccTLD registrations.
The General Sunrise Period for non-Montenegrin entities kicks off on May 6 through May 20 . Only trademark owners with valid trademarks or service marks registered before June 28, 2006 are eligible to apply for .ME domains at this time.
A Quiet Period follows from May 20 till June 6 . There will be no registrations. Sunrise auctions for names with multiple applications will be held. A Sunrise Challenge Period to process trademark domain disputes runs from June 9 to July 7 .
Landrush happens from June 6 through June 26 . Anyone and everyone can apply. This is followed by another Quiet Period from June 26 to July 17 . Landrush auctions begin for names with multiple applications.
Open Registration begins July 17 .
“Me” is popularly used a pronoun in several languages, offering countless possibilities. A growing community of bloggers worldwide are likely to favor a personal .ME address. Premium verb names with a deliberate call to action (i.e. Buy.me, Call.me, Click.me) carry a definite brand and marketing appeal. Expectations are high. Already, the .ME registry has held back thousands of these premium names for auction following the Open Registration Period, tentatively in September 2008.
